A Linode Alternative in the Akamai Cloud Era

The short answer

People still search for a Linode alternative, but Linode is now part of Akamai Cloud. Akamai has a broad US and global footprint, low transfer-overage pricing, mature automation, and complimentary platform support. Those are substantial advantages.

LayerOne is the smaller alternative when Tampa is the target, the workload needs only a self-managed KVM VPS, and lower displayed prices or a direct relationship with the infrastructure team matter more than Akamai's reach and service catalog.

What are we actually comparing?

Akamai's representative Shared CPU pricing started at $5/month for 1 GB RAM, one shared vCPU, 25 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer when checked. The 8 GB Shared CPU size was $48/month with four vCPUs, 160 GB SSD, and 5 TB transfer. Billing rounds to the hour and normally caps at the monthly rate; powered-off instances remain billable.

Akamai explicitly positions Shared CPU for variable workloads and advises keeping sustained average use below 80%, because contention is possible. Its paid Backup service starts at $2/month on the 1 GB size, stores up to four restore points, excludes attached volumes, and stays in the same data center.

Advertised vCPU counts, storage labels, and port speeds are specifications, not benchmark results. Different host CPUs, contention policies, storage systems, and network paths can make similar-looking plans behave differently. We have not invented a score or run a one-off benchmark and called it universal.

When Akamai Cloud (Linode) is the better choice

• You need broad US placement, global core regions, or access to Akamai's broader edge and security portfolio.
• You value low core-region transfer overage, mature API tooling, multiple compute families, Block Storage, Object Storage, managed Kubernetes, or cloud firewalls.
• You want complimentary 24/7 phone and online support for infrastructure issues.
• Your existing Linode estate is automated and healthy. Rebuilding it on a smaller provider solely for a lower sticker price may be false economy.

When LayerOne may fit better

• You want Tampa specifically and your users' measured paths favor it over Akamai's nearby regions.
• You need common VPS sizes at a lower displayed monthly equivalent and can validate performance for your application.
• You value a 2.5 Gbps general port, an optional 10 Gbps family, and included L3/L4 mitigation.
• You want support close to the hardware operator and accept that LayerOne cannot match Akamai's region map, products, SLA, or IPv6.

LayerOne's current 1 GB gc.nano plan is $3.00/month equivalent, with one vCPU, 20 GB Enterprise SAS SSD, and a dedicated IPv4. General Compute has a 2.5 Gbps port; Network Optimized plans have a 10 Gbps port. Transfer is an account pool: 2 TB included per account, plus up to 500 GB for each server per UTC calendar month, earned in proportion to time provisioned and shared across the pool. Additional transfer is $3.00/TB per calendar month.

Backup storage is an optional add-on at $1.00 per 10 GB per month, billed hourly from account credit. Snapshots and backups share that pool. Keep an off-server copy of anything you cannot replace too. Backups and snapshots stay on LayerOne's cluster in the Tampa data center, so they are not an off-site archive. See Backups and snapshots.

LayerOne's limits, plainly

• One live region: LayerOne deploys in Tampa today. If Tampa is the wrong network location for your users, choose a provider closer to them.
• No IPv6 yet: every public VPS has IPv4, but an IPv6 requirement rules LayerOne out today.
• A smaller product catalog: LayerOne does not currently offer managed databases, managed Kubernetes, object storage, GPUs, or a global region fleet.
• SAS SSD rather than NVMe: the public plans use Enterprise SAS SSD. If local NVMe throughput is a hard requirement, buy it from a provider that offers it.

Compare the whole invoice

For Akamai, choose a core or distributed region first because availability and pricing differ, then add Backup service, volumes, extra IPv4, and transfer overage. For LayerOne, include optional backup storage, your independent backup target, and extra transfer. A $15.00/mo LayerOne 8 GB gc.medium and a $48 Akamai 8 GB plan expose similar top-line memory and disk figures, but that is not proof of equal CPU, network, support, or resilience.

For LayerOne, also account for the prepaid-credit model. Servers draw credit hourly while they exist. Destroying a server stops future runtime charges, but unused account credit stays on the account unless a refund is approved under the Terms.

Test before moving production

1. Run the LayerOne looking glass and the other provider's network test from the places your users actually are.
2. Deploy the smallest sensible test VM with the same operating system and application. Measure response time, CPU steal, disk latency, and packet loss over several busy and quiet periods.
3. Calculate a 30-day total including IPv4, backups, transfer, taxes, support, setup charges, and any annual commitment or renewal price.
4. Restore a real backup into the test VM before changing DNS. A backup that has never been restored is only a hope.

Bottom line

Choose Akamai Cloud for its reach, transfer economics, platform support, and ecosystem. Test LayerOne for a self-managed Tampa VPS when a smaller bill and operator relationship are worth the missing cloud features. The name changed; the honest comparison is with Akamai's current product, not a remembered version of Linode.
