A Hetzner Alternative in the USA: The Honest Version

The short answer

If your workload belongs in Germany or Finland, Hetzner remains hard to argue against. This article is specifically about a Hetzner alternative in the USA, where Hetzner offers cloud products in Ashburn, Virginia, and Hillsboro, Oregon, and where its pricing changed materially on June 15, 2026.

LayerOne is not a global replacement for Hetzner. It is a smaller US option worth testing when Tampa is closer to your users, you want an IPv4 included with the VPS, or you prefer a direct relationship with the team operating the hardware.

What are we actually comparing?

For new orders and rescales, Hetzner's official June 2026 adjustment set the US CPX11 monthly cap at $20.49 instead of $6.99 and the CCX13 at $50.99 instead of $19.99, before the separately billed IPv4. Some legacy-priced resources can remain at their previous rate until specified changes are made. Those are Hetzner's own plan changes, not a claim that either plan is equivalent to a LayerOne size.

Hetzner's US cloud regions include at least 1 TB of transfer, with additional transfer currently listed at $1.20/TB. Cloud servers bill hourly up to a monthly cap and continue billing while powered off; the resource must be deleted to stop charges. LayerOne bills hourly from prepaid credit without presenting that rate as a monthly cap.

Advertised vCPU counts, storage labels, and port speeds are specifications, not benchmark results. Different host CPUs, contention policies, storage systems, and network paths can make similar-looking plans behave differently. We have not invented a score or run a one-off benchmark and called it universal.

When Hetzner is the better choice

• You need Europe. Hetzner's owned German and Finnish data-center footprint is a genuine advantage that LayerOne does not have.
• You need mature cloud features: IPv6, volumes, load balancers, placement groups, a broad API, or established Terraform automation.
• You need dedicated-vCPU resources or NVMe storage. Hetzner offers compute classes and storage characteristics LayerOne does not currently sell.
• Your deployment already works well there. A migration adds risk; a competitor's existence is not a reason to move a healthy server.

When LayerOne may fit better

• Your users are in Florida, the Southeast, the Caribbean, or nearby Latin American networks and a real Tampa path test beats Ashburn and Hillsboro for them.
• You want small KVM sizes without paying Hetzner's post-adjustment US price for a larger minimum configuration.
• You want a public IPv4 bundled with the plan and always-on L3/L4 DDoS mitigation without assembling separate line items.
• You value talking to a small US operator and accept that the trade is a much narrower feature set and region footprint.

LayerOne's current 1 GB gc.nano plan is $3.00/month equivalent, with one vCPU, 20 GB Enterprise SAS SSD, and a dedicated IPv4. General Compute has a 2.5 Gbps port; Network Optimized plans have a 10 Gbps port. Transfer is an account pool: 2 TB included per account, plus up to 500 GB for each server per UTC calendar month, earned in proportion to time provisioned and shared across the pool. Additional transfer is $3.00/TB per calendar month.

Backup storage is an optional add-on at $1.00 per 10 GB per month, billed hourly from account credit. Snapshots and backups share that pool. Keep an off-server copy of anything you cannot replace too. Backups and snapshots stay on LayerOne's cluster in the Tampa data center, so they are not an off-site archive. See Backups and snapshots.

LayerOne's limits, plainly

• One live region: LayerOne deploys in Tampa today. If Tampa is the wrong network location for your users, choose a provider closer to them.
• No IPv6 yet: every public VPS has IPv4, but an IPv6 requirement rules LayerOne out today.
• A smaller product catalog: LayerOne does not currently offer managed databases, managed Kubernetes, object storage, GPUs, or a global region fleet.
• SAS SSD rather than NVMe: the public plans use Enterprise SAS SSD. If local NVMe throughput is a hard requirement, buy it from a provider that offers it.

Compare the whole invoice

For Hetzner, select the US network zone before reading the price, then add the Primary IPv4, backups or snapshots, volumes, and outbound transfer. European headline pricing and included transfer do not describe an Ashburn or Hillsboro invoice. For LayerOne, include any extra transfer, optional backup storage, and an off-server backup destination of your own.

For LayerOne, also account for the prepaid-credit model. Servers draw credit hourly while they exist. Destroying a server stops future runtime charges, but unused account credit stays on the account unless a refund is approved under the Terms.

Test before moving production

1. Run the LayerOne looking glass and the other provider's network test from the places your users actually are.
2. Deploy the smallest sensible test VM with the same operating system and application. Measure response time, CPU steal, disk latency, and packet loss over several busy and quiet periods.
3. Calculate a 30-day total including IPv4, backups, transfer, taxes, support, setup charges, and any annual commitment or renewal price.
4. Restore a real backup into the test VM before changing DNS. A backup that has never been restored is only a hope.

Bottom line

Stay with Hetzner for European workloads, its mature automation, NVMe, IPv6, and multi-region designs. Test LayerOne for a straightforward US VPS when Tampa is the location you actually want. The looking-glass result matters more than either logo.
